What should I do if my dog has ticks?

If you have found a tick in your dog’s armpits, under the tail, or behind the ears, you need to carefully remove it. Check the most favorite parts of your pet for ticks to hide, however, they can spread everywhere on your pet’s body. Special tick remover tools make it easier and secure the full removal of the tick. Often small parts of their mouth get stuck in the skin causing an infection, or if you squeeze the tick, you actually make it spit out more material into your pet’s bloodstream.

How to prevent and avoid ticks?

Applying flea and tick preventive medication or products is the most effective means of prevention. It however is important to check with your vet which products to use as resistance for products is noticed and should be avoided. It is important to make sure that they are protected from fleas and ticks. Flea and tick products are not just important for your dog’s comfort and health. They can also prevent you and your family from getting Lyme disease or any other tick-borne illness. There are plenty of options to choose from to keep your dog healthy. However, regardless of what product you choose, you should always check your dog for ticks that might have attached themselves after spending time outdoors.
Keep things tidy and use preventives when your dog does go out, your dog should have minimal risk of becoming a meal for ticks. Reduce tick habitat in your yard. Keeping your lawn, bushes and trees, trimmed will help reduce the population of ticks in your backyard. Always remember to visit your vet regularly for a happy and healthy dog. The products (tablet, spot-on, shampoo, spray, collar, and injection) differ in the way they work and you should choose the one that best fits your pet’s needs. Ask our vets for the right product for your dog.
